Image-Guided Surgery in Frisco

6405607 l 300x199In the past, spine surgery generally required invasive techniques that caused a great deal of post-operative pain and long healing times for patients. As technology advanced, minimally invasive techniques were discovered that reduced healing times and post-operative pain. Today, neuro and spine surgeons at The Neuro & Spine Wellness Center have access to image-guided surgery, a type of surgery that allows the surgeon to see what is going on during the procedure in real time inside of the body. This allows for precise operations and a level of accuracy and care that was not available previously.

How Does Image Guided Surgery Work?

Image-guided surgery works like many other surgeries, but the main difference is in the technology. Depending upon the level of complexity of the surgery, the patient will be anesthetized prior to the operation. The neurosurgeon will then identify the area to be examined or repaired and mark it. Small incisions will be made and scopes or other tools will be inserted. A camera that is connected to a monitor and an imaging machine will show the surgeon exactly where his or her tools are inside of the patient. During this process, the surgeon will also be able to see elements of the patient’s body, including any damaged tissue. Once the operation is complete, the incisions will be closed and the patient will be taken to a recovery area.

Is Image-Guided Surgery Safe?

Because image-guided surgery allows a surgeon to see exactly where his or her instruments are internally in relation to the patient’s body, it is generally regarded as a type of surgery that comes with the least amount of possible complications. In traditional surgery or surgery using only a laparoscope, the surgeon only has a limited view of the patient’s body, but with image-guided surgery, a surgeon will be able to guide instruments safely. Of course, all surgeries carry some risk, so it’s important to discuss your options with one of our neuro and spine surgeons before making any decisions.
